Have a look around the house: your closet, kids' rooms, attic and even the kitchen. There are components lurking around in there that might very well win the most original costume of the evening award. It takes an open mind, a good eye and a little creativity!
Simple Ingredients for Sensational Costumes
The thought process might start with a funny hat or some old maternity clothes. A gown that you only wore once or even a wedding dress can get you thinking about how to make it glamorous, scary or amusing. Figure out what look you're going for once a piece of clothing or household object gets your attention. Some ideas you can play with are:
- Garlic Bulb: Gather together a white garbage bag and white tights. Cut holes for your legs, arms and eyes. Using a purple marker draw lines vertically. Plump out the garbage bag around your middle with tissue paper. Tie at the top leaving uneven edges. You are now officially a garlic bulb!
- Mummy: Put on close fitting pants and long-sleeved tee shirt. Toilet paper yourself from top to bottom. Presto! You are a mummy. Add some padding to your middle and you become a pregnant mummy! Or add a top hat and cane and you become a mummy with class!
- Autumn Tree: Take red, orange, yellow and brown construction paper and cut out leaf shapes. Using an old pair of tights and tee, staple the leaf shapes in an overlapping pattern. You are an autumn tree. Get really creative and wear a bird's nest hat (an old wreath) with a bird sitting in it.
- Ancient Greek: Cut up an old white sheet to create a toga. Cut a Greek key pattern at the bottom, put on some sandals and wear a leaf headband that can be made out of green construction paper and taped together. Use raffia or cord to cinch in the waist.
- Audrey Hepburn: Choose a close-fitting gown, long white gloves, style your hair in an up-sweep and apply dramatic, elegant makeup. If you don't have a tapered cigarette holder, make one out of a wooden chopstick painted glossy black. You are now Audrey Hepburn in “Breakfast at Tiffany's”!
